As the days get longer, snow drifts begin to melt away and the weather becomes warmer, we realize spring is near. However, as spring arrives, along comes spring work! By April we have more spring work than we may want, but this month also offers a bright spot, a chance to get away for a few days to the WESTERN NATIONAL ANGUS FUTURITY in Reno.

For years the WNAF has been one of the greatest events in the Angus world, offering three days of entertainment, education and the opportunity to catch up with old friends (and hopefully meeting new ones).

There is something for everyone:

  • A superb Junior Show. Some of the best young showmen bring the Angus cattle they have raised or purchased highlighting their talent at fitting and exhibiting Angus cattle.
  • The ROV Female Show, a display of some of America’s fine young Angus females.

  • The Bull Show, offering a chance to see many young herd sire prospects.

  • The Idaho Angus Association provides a luncheon banquet of delicious CAB hot dogs and the opportunity to share stories with your peers in the Angus world.

  • Special Events. The 2008 show is dedicated to an outstanding Angus breeder and benefactor, Hal and Lois Schudel of the Holiday Ranch.

  • The 2008 Western State Queen is chosen.

  • The Show Girl Revue Sale, an opportunity to purchase some outstanding young females.

  • Like a free vacation or some extra cash? Participate in the BIG DRAW. You might need extra money to help out with the Reno night life. Remember, the Futurity covers a large portion of its expense with proceeds from THE DRAW Down. (Hey, its tax deductible too)

31 years ago I married a lady with 2 girls and some Angus cows. She told me we have to save one week of vacation for the WESTERN NATIONAL ANGUS FUTURITY in Reno. That April we loaded up and were off to Reno. The girls showed their heifers in the Junior Show and our family tradition began.

This year will be my 31st trip to Reno. We will have 2 grandsons showing there this year, one in the Junior Show and one in the Open Show. This has been a great family event for us over the years. We have met many new people and made many lasting friends.
If you are not a member of the Western States Angus Association, JOIN. If you are, keep up your membership. Bring the family, you will enjoy it. You may still be going 30 years from now!
